Covid-19: Wike to Pull Down Business Houses, Expel Vagrants and Almajiris

The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has said that he would not hesitate to pull down business houses in Port Harcourt where he declared an indefinite total lockdown.

In a broadcast he made on Monday, the governor declared a 24-hour curfew on some parts of Port Harcourt, and said landlords in the affected areas would be held responsible for the enforcement of the curfew.

He also said the government would expel all vagrants and destitute persons to their respective states in his renewed fight to contain the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic in the state.

He took exceptions to the acts of some security agents posted to close the borders, who compromised their duties and allowed unauthorized persons into the state, promising that such security personnel would be made to pay for their acts.

“To contain this threat therefore, we will be inaugurating the State’s Taskforce on Border Closure on Tuesday, April 28, 2020 to effectively monitor our boundaries and ensure that no unauthorized person and or vehicle leaves or enters our State under any guise in breach of the lockdown order,” the governor declared.

He disclosed that despite efforts of the state to keep off Covid-19 in the state six cases were confirmed in the state. Two of the cases had been discharged, two receiving attention at the isolation centre in Eleme and two that had died of the disease.

The places affected by the total lockdown are Rumuomasi, Rumuobiakani, and Elekahia. He said the conduct of people in other areas like Rumuokwurushi, Oyigbo, Eneka, and Rumuokoro were being watched and could come under total lockdown if they did not comply with government guidelines on Covid-19 conduct of people and neighbourhoods.

He lamented that the state did not have the capacity to cope with any surge in Covid-19 cases and he was therefore appealing to the people to comply with the standard conducts for the pandemic to prevent it from further spreading.

He praised those working on the frontline like doctors, nurses and other health workers, who had staked their necks to contain the pandemic.

“We have also widened our case finding and containment strategy by moving from targeted testing to active sentinel search for cases with acute symptoms across various public and private facilities and subject them to immediate testing, isolation and treatment,” the governor added.
