Collapsed Bridge: Youths Lock Down Port Harcourt Industrial Zone
The entire Eleme Industrial Cluster in Rivers State was shut down on Friday by Eleme youths who were demanding urgent government repair of the collapsed Aleto Bridge on the East – West federal highway.
The youths blocked the road near the collapsed bridge as early as 5 am on Friday causing a traffic hold up that stretched as long as 15km on both sides of the road.
It was only pedestrians and motorcycles that could cross from both sides. The resultant gridlock created hardship for travelers, workers and transported that use the road. The victims had to disembark and trek for kilometers to catch transportation to destinations on the opposite side.
Thousands of trucks conveying containers and petroleum products from the Onne Ports and Onne Oil and Gas Free Zone, Port Harcourt refinery depot, Indorama Eleme Petrochemicals, and Fertiliser complex and Akwa Ibom State.
President of Eleme Youth Council, Brain Emere-Gokpa, said that the youths would not leave the road until government committed to fixing the collapsed bridge.
He also said the youths would not accept palliative work or sub standard contractors bridge. He also called on the government to respond to the infrastructure and social amenity needs of Eleme.
