Olusegun Osoba, former governor of Ogun State, has stressed the need for publishers to quickly adapt and strategise on how best they can explore the Internet in order to be able to pay their staff as at when due. He said this during a lecture and book launch held on Thursday, July 30, 2015, at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs, to celebrate the 80th birthday of Samson Amuka, veteran journalist and publisher of Vanguard Newspaper.
Ted Iwere, chief executive officer, Independent Newspaper Limited, agreed with Osoba.
In his lecture, titled, ‘Today’s Newsroom, Tomorrow’s Newspaper: How to Survive and Thrive in the Internet Age’, Iwere noted that should the Nigerian print media die, then it must be suicide. “It means the industry has failed to adjust to the Internet age,” noted Iwere, while highlighting means by which the newspapers and magazines can explore the Internet to remain relevant to the information-starved audience. He also mentioned several models by which publishers can raise their income through the online and offline platforms.
The event drew the crème de la crème in the media industry, politicians, business moguls, among others. They commented glowingly on the unique and legendary personality of Amuka. Ray Ekpu, former publisher of Newswatch magazine, described Amuka as a very humble and contented man. The event also featured launching of a book titled, Voices From Within: Essays on Nigerian Journalism in Honour of Sam Amuka.
