The Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB, has started investigations into the accident involving a helicopter with registration number 5N-BGD operated by Bristow, which crashed into the lagoon in Oworonshoki area of Lagos on Wednesday, August 12.
In a statement signed by Felix Abali, its commissioner and chief executive officer, CEO, the AIB disclosed that the recovery of the wreckage of the ill-fated aircraft led by Julius Berger Construction Company is underway. The wreckage of the aircraft was recovered on Thursday but the flight recorder better known as black box has not been found. According to the AIB, the search continues on Friday to locate and retrieve the recorders.
The Sikosky 76 helicopter, which was believed to have departed SEDCO oil platform offshore on Wednesday, crashed while on its way to land at Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Search and rescue operation had been concluded after which six of the 12 persons on board, including the two crew members were fatally injured while the six survivors are receiving treatment at the hospital.
The AIB stated that investigation continues with the gathering of evidence both from the crash site and the relevant organisations including the operators and the Control Tower. The Bureau assured that other information will be released to the public as they unfold and in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation, ICAO, law.
