The official visit of President Muhammadu Buhari to Lagos State Thursday provided him opportunity to give assurances on the commitment of his administration for the continued development of the rail and the maritime sectors.
A statement by Femi Adesina, special adviser on media and publicity to the president, said Buhari pledged to “prioritise the railway system as a transportation backbone that can transform industrial and economic activity in the country. ” President Buhari had commissioned the commercial operations of the Lagos-Ibadan railway project at the Mobolaji Johnson Railway Station in the Ebute Meta area of Lagos.
He described the project as another milestone of his administration. He said the vital line will encourage the movement of goods to the hinterland from the Apapa port axis.
That will surely help to solve the traffic gridlock that has almost paralysed economic activity in Apapa and adjoining areas.
While flagging off the Integrated National Security and Waterways Protection Infrastructure, known as the Deep Blue project, the president said the government would enforce maritime regulations as part of efforts to prevent illegal activities in the Nigerian Exclusive Zone. The latter project, anchored by NIMASA and the security agencies to tackle maritime security threats, was conceived in 2017.
