An unspecified number of students of Abia State University, Uturu are said to have been kidnapped on Wednesday night. The report was confirmed by John Kalu, the state commissioner for information.

The students were said to have run into an ambush along Okigwe/Uturu road around 8:00 pm, local time. The incident happened few hours after 27 students of Federal College of Forestry Mechanisation in Kaduna were released after 55 days in the hands of bandits.

Abia State is not entirely new to kidnapping, but the malaise had abated for some time now. What the state and other states in the area have had to deal with is violence. Of recent, the southeast geo-political zone had come under attack by unknown gunmen whose activities have increased the insecurity situation in the area. Police formations have been burnt, as well as correctional centres and the home of Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State.
