The Nigeria Police Force has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi, who was fatally shot by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Nuhu Usman on April 26, 2026, in Effurun, Delta State. The incident, which occurred during the arrest of a suspect in a transport union operation at the Benin Motor Park, has sparked public outrage and calls for accountability.
According to preliminary reports, the Effurun Area Command operatives had been alerted by union members at the Benin Motor Park regarding a suspect, Mene Ogidi, who was caught attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition. As Ogidi was being restrained by transport union members, police officers arrived to take him into lawful custody. However, while the suspect was handcuffed and non-resisting, ASP Usman discharged his firearm, resulting in Ogidi’s death.
The action of ASP Nuhu Usman has been described as a clear violation of police regulations regarding the use of force. The Nigeria Police Force has expressed deep concern over the incident and announced that ASP Usman, along with his entire team, will be transferred to Force Headquarters in Abuja. They will face disciplinary hearings and potential prosecution for the extra-judicial killing of the suspect.

Inspector-General of Police Reacts
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and assured the public that justice would be served. In a statement, the IGP reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance stance against extra-judicial killings, abuse of power, and any actions that compromise public trust in the police.
“We are committed to ensuring that all officers uphold the law and conduct themselves with integrity. This incident will not be swept under the rug, and justice will be served,” the IGP stated.
The leadership of the Nigeria Police Force has vowed to hold those involved accountable for their actions and maintain transparency throughout the investigation and legal proceedings.
Public Reaction and Calls for Justice
The shooting has sparked widespread reactions across Nigeria, with many Nigerians condemning the excessive use of force against a restrained suspect. Human rights groups and activists are calling for immediate reforms within the police force to prevent such incidents in the future.
Activist Harrison Gwamnishu commented on the case, expressing concern over potential cover-ups and urging the public to demand justice for Mene Ogidi:
“This is an appalling act of police brutality. We can’t allow this to become just another case swept under the carpet. The family of Mene Ogidi deserves justice, and the police must be held accountable for their actions.”
