In a fiery statement that’s reverberating across global political circles, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has condemned former U.S. President Donald Trump for his recent threats to impose tariffs on BRICS nations if re-elected.

Reacting to Trump’s social media remarks targeting BRICS trade relations, President Lula described the comments as reckless and provocative, warning that Brazil and its partners in the BRICS alliance would not tolerate economic bullying from Washington.

“It is not responsible or serious… for him to be threatening the world on the internet,” Lula said during a press briefing in Brasília.
“We are sovereign nations. If he thinks he can impose tariffs, we can too.”

The strong rebuke comes after Trump, in a post on Truth Social, suggested that the U.S. would reimpose heavy tariffs on BRICS member states—Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa—accusing them of “economic sabotage” against American interests.

President Lula’s remarks underline growing resistance to perceived Western economic dominance and reflect BRICS’ renewed push for multipolarity and fair trade in the global economic order. His comments also signal Brazil’s firm stance as it prepares to host upcoming BRICS meetings where trade cooperation and currency alternatives are expected to dominate discussions.

Analysts warn that escalating trade tensions between the U.S. and BRICS nations could significantly impact global markets, especially in energy, agriculture, and technology sectors.

As Trump eyes a return to the White House in 2025, world leaders like Lula are drawing battle lines early—making it clear that the era of unilateral threats may be over.
