President Goodluck Jonathan says Nigeria’s achievements over the past 15 years of democratic rule are being threatened by the current spate of terrorist violence in the country.
Jonathan said all the gains of the past 15 years of democratic governance in the most populous African country are threatened by the presence of international terrorism on the country’s shores.
Jonathan who is the country’s third democratically elected president since the advent of the fourth republic in 1999 said, “The despicable abduction of school girls from Chibok in Borno State has brought to the awareness of the entire world, the heartless brutality of these terrorists who want to instigate a descent into anarchy and balkanize our nation.”
The President made the statement in his traditional Democracy Day remark to mark the nations return to civilian rule.
Jonathan promised not to only secure the freedom of the over 200 Chibok girls currently held captive by the insurgents, but again vowed to rout terrorism in the country.
The country marked its centenary celebration earlier this year.
Nigeria has recently been brought under frequent terrorists attacks, which have claimed thousands of lives and properties worth billions of Naira.
And just as the country was planning for today’s celebration of Democracy day, over 41 persons were killed following terrorist attacks in the troubled Borno State.
