Crisis is brewing in the Edo State chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, as an attempt by the current Oyonnude Kure leadership to get a renewed mandate for another term on a platter of gold failed on Monday at a state executive committee meeting of the Association. Consequent upon the degeneration of the meeting to a rowdy and stormy session, the meeting which started by 11 am, dragged on till 3 p.m.
An inside source hinted Tell that trouble started when after Oyonnude’s address, Rev Fr. Richard Ofere moved a motion calling for automatic endorsement for another term for Kure and his team because according to him “they have performed well in the last three years”. But before the motion could be seconded, another member, Rev Chris Igbinosa raised a point of order saying that the motion was premature. Igbinosa noted that there was no financial report of the association in the last three years and expressed the need for such basic expectations to be met before talking about re-election. It was learnt that as a result of a heated argument that ensued, Kure had to abruptly adjourn the meeting and thereafter informed members that a new date for a fresh meeting for election would be communicated to voting members of the association. Efforts to get the comment of the chairman after the meeting was not successful as the Secretary of the Association, Humphrey Iriabe said the meeting was not for press coverage.
