The member of the House of Representatives representing Port Harcourt Constituency II, Chinyere Igwe, has declined appeals by members of his constituency to seek reelection to the federal house.

In a statement he issued on Thursday, a copy of which was made available to the magazine, Igwe said having done so much to meet the needs of his constituency in the current session of the House of Representatives, he had decided “to quit when the ovation is loudest.”

Igwe, who is a known loyalist of Governor Nyesom Wike, said throughout his political career, he had demonstrated loyalty and commitment to leadership even to his own detriment, but that unfortunately, that commitment now appeared to be an albatross and “greatest undoing” for him.

He said though his decision to step aside might be bitter news for his constituents, friends and family who had wanted him to continue with his political career at the House of Representatives, it might sound “sweet to agents of darkness” that he did not name.

He apologised to his supporters and friends for turning down their calls for him to participate in the nomination process of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for 2022.
