There was pandemonium at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Owerri, the Imo State capital on Thursday.
Security operatives ordered everyone out of the premises of the Commission as election materials were being distributed.
Trouble started at about 5pm when heavily armed policemen numbering about 50 arrived the office and ordered that anyone who was not an INEC official or a security agent should vacate the premises.
Party agents, journalists and several others who had gathered for accreditation and collection of election materials were tear gassed as they chanted “no intimidation, no intimidation.”
The pandemonium resulted in a heavy traffic gridlock along the Owerri – Port Harcourt Road. Most people were forced to hurriedly leave the INEC office without accomplishing their mission there.
