There are positive reports as well as stories of sharp practices as the electorate vote on who runs the affairs of Osun State for the next four years. First, there are reports of large turnout, particularly in places like Ede and Iragbiji, towns of Ademola Adelekeand Isiaka Oyetola respectively. The latter, who is running on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC, is the incumbent governor seeking reelection for a second term of four years. Adeleke, of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, is the second time challenger of Oyetola.

The first time they had an encounter at the polls was 2018 when Oyetola won during the second ballot. Adeleke, who rode on popularity of Isiaka Adeleke, his late brother, insists that he was robbed then.

So, as was the case in the run up to the polls this Saturday, there have been counter allegations of sharp practices between the two parties. One major issue is the allegation of vote buying on either side. In fact, the PDP is actually alleging further that the security organisations are under intense pressure from the APC to collaborate in efforts by the ruling party to rig the election. Some of these allegations have been denied by officials of APC.

But election monitors have decried cases of vote buying and there have been reports of security agencies preventing some attempts at buying and selling votes.

However, one positive development that have been noticed in different places is the large turnout of voters. This has been noticed not just in Iragbiji and Ede but also in Ile Ife, Ilesha, Iwo and local government areas like Ife East, Boluwaduro and Ayedade.

The world is watching the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC not just to determine the efficacy of its new technology, Bimordal Voter Accreditation System,BVAS but how it will manage its image as an unbiased umpire at elections.
