Olu Foundation Gives N20m Worth of Scholarships to 200 Eleme Undergraduates

No fewer than 200 undergraduates from Eleme, Rivers State, have received N20 million in scholarship support from the Josiah Olu Foundation to cushion the financial burden of tertiary education.

Each beneficiary received N100,000 at the presentation ceremony held on Friday at Akpajo, Eleme Local Government Area.

The founder of the foundation and former member representing Eleme Constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Josiah Olu, said the annual scholarship scheme was established to give intelligent but indigent students the opportunity to pursue their education without financial constraints.

Olu said his personal experience of struggling to finance his education inspired his commitment to supporting young people from less-privileged backgrounds.

“I know what many students are going through because I also passed through financial difficulties while in school,” he said.

He disclosed that the 200 beneficiaries were selected through a transparent process from more than 500 applicants, adding that the foundation planned to increase the number of beneficiaries from next year.

Olu charged the beneficiaries to make the most of the opportunity by taking their studies seriously and striving for academic excellence.

He said the foundation’s educational intervention was not limited to undergraduates, noting that it also awards scholarships to secondary school students and supports Eleme indigenes at the Nigerian Law School.

According to him, Nigerian Law School students from Eleme received N500,000 each from the foundation last year.

Beyond education, Olu said the foundation had also introduced an entrepreneurship programme designed to empower women of Eleme extraction and improve their economic independence.

He urged other well-meaning individuals and organisations to invest in education, describing it as a critical tool for transforming the lives of young people and communities.

The ceremony attracted prominent Eleme indigenes and other stakeholders, including the member representing Eleme, Tai and Oyigbo Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Felix Nwaeke, and the Executive Director, Projects, of the South-South Development Commission, Marcus Nle Ejii.
