Kayode Fayemi,former governor of Ekiti State has said that he has no regret for all his actions towards reforming the education sector of the state when he was in office.

He said this at a public lecture organised by the Ogun State Chapter of the Afenifere Renewal Group,ARG, in Abeokuta on Thursday.

The governor whose administration had a rather strict relationship with the teachers said, “I have no apology for everything I did in the education sector in Ekiti State, including what I did for teachers. I asked them to live up to their responsibilities and give our children the kind of education that will sustain the future.”

The governor added that education reforms, skill development and power must be at the centre of any national development plan.

In his presentation on the topic, “Before Nigeria’s oil Runs Dry-Option For Development In The South-West,” Fayemi stressed that the call for the diversification of the economy has almost become a mantra.

“What we need to do is to do something about it by effectively exploring all the non-oil sectors of the economy as well as providing appropriate climate for agriculture,telephony and ICT,entertainment, and others to thrive,” Fayemi said.

The former governor condemned the over concentration of power at the central level of government in Nigeria and called for effective federalism. “We must quickly devolve and decentralise powers to the constituent federating units in the country,” he said.

Segun Odegbami,coordinator, ARG,Ogun State, in his address, noted that it was rather unfortunate that Nigeria’s over dependence on crude oil has brought the country to its present state of economic illness. “The oil has brought more curse than blessing. That was why we thought of organising a platform to fashion out the way out for the southwestern states and the country at large,” Odegbami said.
