In a disturbing revelation that has gone viral on social media, Nigerian soldiers have disclosed the meager amount of food allocated to feed nine military personnel for an entire month a shocking illustration of substandard provisions within the armed forces.
A video clip shared by Instablog9ja circulated on X (formerly Twitter), showing soldiers lamenting the insufficient rations designed for nine people over 30 days. According to their account, the ration plan included just enough staples, oils, and proteins to feed the group, but the total volume raised serious concerns about nutrition, morale, and the well-being of troops deployed under demanding conditions.
The post quickly ignited public outrage, with many Nigerians expressing anger on X and Facebook over the underfunded conditions. Comments ranged from disbelief to outright condemnation:
“Our soldiers are risking their lives, and this is what we give them? Shame!” one user wrote, while another added, “How are they expected to perform with such ration?”
The allegations echo earlier reports of deteriorating conditions in military barracks and deployments such as unpaid allowances, poor accommodation, and long-standing complaints about “inedible food” highlighted by soldiers in operations zones like Katsina and Zamfara.
Neither the Nigerian Army nor the Ministry of Defence has issued a formal response to the footage. Meanwhile, military families, advocacy groups, and civil society activists are urging a full investigation into the army’s rationing system and broader welfare conditions.
One veterans’ representative told Tell News that beyond insufficient food, soldiers are also facing challenges with logistical support, medical services, and mental health issues that could escalate without urgent policy reforms.
This revelation comes at a critical time as the Nigerian military campaigns against insurgent groups and undertakes internal security operations. Observers warn that continuous neglect of troop welfare could undermine operational readiness and national security.
As public pressure mounts, all eyes are on authorities to account for the alleged starvation-level rations and to ensure Nigerian soldiers receive the support, nutrition, and care they deserve while serving the nation.
