Alex Badeh, Nigeria’s chief of defence staff has announced that Nigeria’s military and Boko Haram, terrorist sect have agreed to a ceasefire.
Badeh disclosed this at the end of a three-day security meeting between Nigeria and Cameroon saying Nigerian soldiers would comply with the agreement.
Hassan Tukur, Nigerian presidential aide reportedly said the agreement was sealed after a month of negotiations mediated by Chad, during which a government delegation twice met representatives of the group.
Tukur said the government had responded to a unilateral ceasefire Boko Haram announced on Thursday and the sect has assured they will release the schoolgirls in their captivity.
However, the presidential aide said he is only cautiously optimistic and arrangements for the release of the girls abducted from their school in Borno would be finalised at another meeting.
The next meeting will be held next week in Ndjamena, Chad’s capital.
