In a rare fusion of pop culture influence and global diplomacy, American rapper Nicki Minaj appeared alongside U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz at a high-profile panel on Tuesday, drawing urgent attention to the rising wave of Christian persecution in Nigeria.

The event, held at the U.S. Mission to the United Nations and moderated by Fox News anchor Harris Faulkner, focused on the continuing attacks carried out by extremist groups, including Boko Haram and Islamic State–affiliated militants.

Ambassador Waltz emphasized the severity of the crisis, referencing data that more than 5,000 Christians were killed in Nigeria in the past year alone. Since 2009, an estimated 20,000 churches have been burned, bombed, or destroyed, prompting the Trump administration to once again designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern (CPC) — a classification that can trigger diplomatic pressure and sanctions.

Minaj, whose presence drew global attention to the panel, used her platform to amplify the plight of persecuted communities, calling for stronger international action and humanitarian support.

However, Nigerian officials and several security analysts pushed back against portraying the crisis as solely Christian-targeted. They argue that the country’s spiraling violence stems from complex security challenges, including banditry, mass kidnapping, farmer-herder clashes, and ethnic tensions, which have claimed lives across religious and ethnic groups.

The UN panel is expected to intensify international scrutiny on Nigeria’s handling of insecurity, while also sparking renewed debate about the framing of the violence and the most effective path toward long-term peace.
