About 50 people have declared missing after a communal clash between Umumbo and Omor communities in Ayamelum local government area of Anambra State. There are fears that some of those people may have died. At the last count, about 300 farmers have been injured in the clash in a report confirmed on Thursday. The clash, which started on Monday, 24th of April was said to have erupted when youths of both communities mobilised against each other over lingering boundary dispute. It was learnt that the two communities are among the major food-producing areas of Anambra State, where rice and other grains are produced in large quantity
Report gathered that the current misunderstanding was allegedly triggered by suspected farmers who instigated others to seek vengeance. Report, however, confirmed that as at the time police were drafted to the area, no fewer than 50 persons were missing and large number of houses, shops, and rice mills belonging to Umumbo community were also destroyed as a result of the revenge mission. Meanwhile, following the clash, many people were said to have ran away from their houses for fear of being killed, as both communities pushed towards each other in a severe confrontational manner.
However, the speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Uche Okafor, who represents the constituency in the state legislature, was said to be accompanied by heavily armed military and mobile policemen to put an end to the bloody clash.
