The Lift Above Poverty Organisation, LAPO said it had made a disbursement of ₦12.2billion to 152,446 rural farmers in its 253 branches across 21 states during the financial year 2020. LAPO said this was geared towards improving the nation’s food security. This figure represents 12% growth over the sum of 10.9 billion disbursed during the year 2019. This figure, it noted, represented 12% growth over the sum of 10.9 billion disbursed during the year 2019.

Reviewing the performance of the LAPO Agricultural and Rural Development Initiative, (LARDI) at the weekend, the acting Executive Director of the organisation, Dr. Honestus Ayobami Obadiora, enjoined low-income farmers to take advantage of the affordable loan opportunity offered by LAPO to enhance the growth and development of their farm enterprises.

Obadiora, who reiterated the organization’s commitment to Nigeria’s agricultural development, attributed LAPO’s outstanding performance over the years to strong institutional strength, staff commitment to excellence and hard work. He said that the organization was ready to maintain its superior performance trajectory.

In a similar vein, LAPO said it is worried that a high percentage of women in Nigeria are vulnerable to illnesses, disability and even death due to lack of access to comprehensive health services, a situation it noted, has made the country one of the highest in maternal mortality rates amongst developing nations.

Disclosing that it had improved the health conditions of 1,257,297 vulnerable community members across the country in 2020, LAPO said it was determined to change the narratives of high maternal mortality in Nigeria with its health intervention programme in order to mitigate the detrimental effect of maternal mortality on the socio-economic development of the nation.

In an interactive session with journalists, Obadiora said the beneficiaries were educated on maternal and child health practices with key focus on maternal and child health, antenatal care and nutrition, family planning, water, sanitation and hygiene.

He charged members of the public to imbibe the culture of regular medical checkup to enable early detection and management of health conditions, noting that routine health screening and awareness creation by the organization had contributed significantly to the well- being of community members.
