Panic turned to relief in Lagos after a four-storey school building housing Yemco Nursery, Primary and Comprehensive College in Aguda, Ogba, suddenly collapsed just minutes after hundreds of students and staff were safely evacuated.

The dramatic incident occurred around midday on Monday, March 9, during renovation work on the structure. Despite the scale of the collapse, no lives were lost after workers reportedly noticed early warning signs and quickly raised the alarm.

According to eyewitnesses, bricklayers working on the building detected unusual vibrations and structural instability. They immediately alerted school authorities, prompting teachers and staff to begin a rapid evacuation of the premises.

Within minutes, 368 students and school staff were marched out of classrooms and guided to safety.

Less than three minutes after the evacuation was completed, the building came crashing down.

A deeply emotional video shared widely on social media has since captured the relief felt by many parents. In the viral clip, a mother recounts how her twin children were among the students’ evacuated moments before the collapse.

“They marched 368 students out of the school building,” she said tearfully.

The video, circulated widely on platforms including posts by social media accounts such as @ChuksEricE and @yabaleftonline, has attracted tens of thousands of views and reactions from Nigerians who described the incident as a miracle.

Eyewitnesses described chaotic but organized scenes as teachers moved quickly from classroom to classroom while students rushed out under supervision.

Residents around the school expressed shock, noting that the building appeared structurally stable from the outside before the sudden collapse.

The Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education confirmed that the school is registered under the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA). Authorities say a full investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the collapse, especially as renovation work was ongoing at the time.

The incident has once again sparked concerns about building safety and regulatory enforcement in Lagos, where structural failures have occasionally resulted in devastating losses.

Fortunately, this time tragedy was narrowly avoided. Some students reportedly sustained minor bruises during the hurried evacuation, but no serious injuries were recorded.

Videos of the evacuation and aftermath have continued to circulate online, with many Nigerians praising the workers and teachers whose swift action saved hundreds of lives.

“God is faithful,” one social media user wrote. Another added: “Thank God for the workers who noticed the danger early.”

For many parents, the now-viral line — “They marched 368 students out of the school building” — has become a powerful reminder of how vigilance and quick decisions can prevent disaster.

Across Lagos, the incident is already prompting renewed conversations about school safety, building inspections, and the need for stricter monitoring of construction standards.

For the families of Yemco students, however, relief remains the dominant emotion — a narrow escape that could have easily ended in tragedy.
