Chaos in Kano: Shooting Stars Players Brutally Attacked by Kano Pillars Fans After NPFL Draw
Violence mars NPFL match as Kano Pillars fans reportedly assault Shooting Stars players after 1–1 draw in Kano, leaving several injured and sparking national outrage.
Tension erupted at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday after violent scenes broke out following a 1–1 draw between Kano Pillars and Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan in a Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) fixture.
Eyewitness reports and viral videos shared online show Shooting Stars players and officials bloodied and injured inside their changing room after being allegedly attacked by enraged Kano Pillars supporters moments after the final whistle.
The incident reportedly began when fans, angered by what they claimed were “biased officiating decisions,” stormed the pitch and descended on the visiting team. The 3SC players were said to have been pelted with objects and physically assaulted before security operatives intervened.
Images circulating on social media depict several Shooting Stars players nursing injuries, with some receiving emergency medical treatment at the stadium. According to sources, team equipment and personal belongings were also damaged during the chaos.
The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) management has yet to issue an official statement, but sources within the league suggest an emergency disciplinary review may be underway. If confirmed, Kano Pillars could face sanctions, including stadium bans, heavy fines, or points deduction, for failing to control their supporters.
In a brief statement, Shooting Stars management condemned the attack, describing it as “a shameful act that threatens the spirit of Nigerian football.” The club demanded justice and better protection for visiting teams in future fixtures.
Football fans across Nigeria have expressed outrage online, calling for the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and NPFL authorities to take decisive action to prevent similar incidents.
As of press time, several injured players were being treated, while security presence around Kano’s stadium has been increased to prevent further unrest.
