Panic and tension have gripped residents of Jos North following a deadly Sunday night attack in Angwan Rukuba that left at least 12 people dead and several others injured.
The Plateau State Government has since imposed an immediate 48-hour curfew across the local government area in a bid to contain the situation and prevent possible reprisals.
The restriction, which took effect from midnight on March 29, will remain in place until April 1, 2026, according to an official statement issued by the state’s Commissioner for Information and Communication, Rt. Hon. Joyce Lohya Ramnap.
Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang condemned the attack, describing it as “barbaric and unprovoked,” while assuring residents that security agencies have been fully deployed to restore order and track down those responsible.
“The government is taking all necessary steps to ensure the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice,” the statement read.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, suspected to be cultists, stormed the Gari Ya Waye community in Angwan Rukuba between 7:30 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., riding on motorcycles and opening fire indiscriminately.
Residents were thrown into chaos as gunshots rang out, forcing many to flee for safety while others were caught in the violence.
Security sources confirmed that at least 12 people lost their lives in the attack and several others sustained injuries. Victims are currently receiving treatment at nearby hospitals, although authorities have yet to release their identities.
The motive behind the killings remains unclear, but early indications suggest possible cult-related violence. Investigations are ongoing.
The incident has once again raised concerns about security in Jos North, an area that has experienced recurring violence linked to communal tensions and criminal activities.
Authorities have urged residents to remain calm, comply strictly with the curfew, and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information.
Security personnel have been deployed across key locations, with patrols intensified to ensure enforcement of the curfew and prevent further breakdown of law and order.
As of Monday morning, no additional attacks had been reported, but many residents have remained indoors amid heightened security presence.
The state government reiterated its commitment to tackling insecurity and restoring lasting peace across Plateau, even as families of victims await official confirmation and further updates.
