The 2014 edition of the Nigeria Media Merit Award, NMMA, would be hosted by the Imo State Government in Owerri from Friday, October 31 to Sunday, November 2.
This was disclosed on Friday, October 10, by Vincent Maduka, the Chairman of the NMMA, in an interactive session with journalists at the body’s secretariat, Ikeja, Lagos.
“Names of nominees for the 2014 edition of the annual event will be out on the website on Monday, October 13,” Maduka said.
Ralph Akinfeleye, the Chairman of the Panel of Assessors, said that the committee received a total of 1,307 entries for this years’ award.
“A total of 1,307 eligible entries were received from 886 entrants for NMMA 2014. 1,124 entries from 774 entrants were received in the print categories, 97 entries came in from 79 entrants in the radio categories and 86 entries were received from 63 entrants in the television categories.
“A total of 53 awards categories were keenly contested for this year and after the meticulous screening exercise by members of the Panel of Assessors, it is noteworthy that for the first time in the last five years, winners are declared for all the 53 NMMA award categories as they all met the prescribed benchmark of 70% total average score by all assessors in the group,” Akinfeleye said.
The report further added that, “clear element of creativity and tactical balance need to be improved upon by broadcasters and there is the need for retraining, especially in pronunciation of indigenous names and locations.
“A high discrepancy in facts, dates and numbers during the reportage of same incident by media organisations in Nigeria were common, which made the stories to be inaccurate.
“Entries in the news photographer of the year were not correctly captioned as their captions do not correspond with the published picture story.”
Akinfeleye also noted that there were general improvements in the entries assessed.
The NMMA is reputed as the most prestigious annual celebration of the best in the media industry in Nigeria.
