Ogun State has officially made aviation history as the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) granted the Gateway International Airport an Aerodrome Operational Permit, authorizing it to operate scheduled commercial air transport flights.
The landmark approval, the first of its kind in Nigeria for a state-owned airport, follows a successful technical inspection, on-site verification, and rigorous audit by NCAA officials. Describing the facility as “a benchmark for what airports should be in the country,” regulators praised its world-class standards and readiness for international operations.
Under the certification, the airport has been designated with an Aerodrome Reference Code of 3C and an ARFFS Category 6, complete with a non-precision runway for Runway 05/23 and an Area Navigation (RNAV) approach system.
In a major breakthrough for trade and commerce, a leading international airline has committed to two weekly cargo flights from London to the Gateway International Airport. The facility will also serve as the official alternate airport to Lagos’s Murtala Muhammed International Airport, giving Ogun State a vital role in Nigeria’s aviation network.
Passenger flights are expected to begin soon, starting with direct routes to Abuja and Port Harcourt, bringing the airport’s impact closer to travelers and businesses alike.
Governor’s office sources say the development will unlock unprecedented opportunities in tourism, foreign investment, and regional economic growth, firmly establishing Ogun State on the global aviation map.
With its strategic location, cutting-edge infrastructure, and bold vision for the future, the Gateway International Airport is set to redefine air travel standards in Nigeria—marking the dawn of a new era for Ogun State and the nation at large.
