Chaotic scenes unfolded at Guadalajara International Airport (GDL) on Sunday as frightened passengers rushed through terminals, took cover behind counters and jetways, and abandoned luggage amid widespread panic following the reported killing of notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho.”

Mexico’s Secretariat of National Defense confirmed that Oseguera Cervantes, founder of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), was fatally wounded during a high-intensity military operation in Tapalpa, Jalisco, on February 22, 2026. Authorities said Army Special Forces, backed by air support and elements of the National Guard, engaged cartel gunmen in a fierce confrontation. El Mencho reportedly died while being airlifted for medical treatment. Several suspected cartel members were killed in the operation, and security personnel were injured.

The development triggered immediate retaliatory violence across multiple regions. Officials reported widespread roadblocks, vehicle arson, highway closures, and clashes between suspected cartel operatives and security forces in several states, including Jalisco and neighboring areas. Thick smoke was seen rising over parts of Guadalajara, Mexico’s second-largest city, as burning vehicles and blocked highways disrupted normal activity. Schools were closed in some districts, and authorities worked to restore order.

At Guadalajara International Airport, viral videos verified by major international outlets such as CNN, Reuters, and Al Jazeera showed passengers running through terminals as reports of violence outside the airport spread rapidly. While there were no confirmed reports of gunmen entering or firing inside the airport terminal itself, nearby unrest and access road blockades fueled fear among travelers.

Airport authorities said operations continued under heightened security, though several flights experienced delays and cancellations due to safety concerns and restricted access routes. International carriers, including United Airlines and American Airlines, were among those affected by disruptions.

The killing of El Mencho marks one of the most significant blows to organized crime leadership in recent years. Oseguera Cervantes had long been one of Mexico’s most wanted figures and faced a multi-million-dollar bounty from U.S. authorities over drug trafficking allegations, including fentanyl distribution.

Security analysts warn that the cartel leader’s death could trigger internal power struggles within the CJNG, potentially leading to further instability as rival factions compete for control. Mexican security forces remain on high alert, clearing roadblocks and reinforcing patrols in affected areas.

Foreign governments, including the United States and Canada, issued security advisories urging citizens in impacted regions to exercise caution and monitor official updates.

Authorities emphasized that the situation remains fluid, with security operations ongoing as Mexico confronts the aftermath of one of the most consequential cartel crackdowns in recent history.
