Governor Oborevwori Explains Delay in Implementing New Minimum Wage, Cites Ongoing Salary Structure Review
Governor Oborevwori clarifies that the delay in implementing the new minimum wage is due to ongoing adjustments in the state’s salary structure to ensure fair compensation.
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, on Tuesday hinted that the delay in the implementation of the new ₦70, 000 minimum wage was due to efforts to fine tune the enabling chart in order not to make mistakes.
Governor Oborevwori disclosed this while addressing staff of the State House of Assembly during the retirement thanksgiving in honour of immediate past Clerk of the Assembly and now Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mrs. Lyna Ocholor.
Recall that the new minimum wage of ₦70, 000 was arrived at after intense negotiation between the federal government and organised Labour and signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Monday July 29, 2024. Giving reasons why the state government was yet to commence implementation, Governor Oborevwori said the state was taking its time to avoid making mistakes, stressing that “We are waiting for the chart of the new minimum wage because we don’t want to make any mistake”.
Thanking the staff of the Assembly for their support when he held sway as Speaker of the 6th and 7th Assemblies, the governor congratulated Mrs. Ocholor on her successful retirement from civil service. He noted that the staff of the Assembly never went on strike throughout his time as Speaker of the Assembly. Governor Oborevwori said “I am very happy to be in your midst today. It is also an opportunity to appreciate the staff of this Assembly. I could remember the 11th of May 2017 when I took over as Mr. Speaker. It was tough but the good thing is that none of the staff, even PASAN, went on strike for the six years I was Speaker. “What I want to say is that anywhere you are working, be good. Anything you are doing, be good. As a civil or public servant, you must do what you will be remembered for.
“If you check this state, Mrs. Ocholor is one of the outstanding Clerks, and I want to thank all of you for supporting her to do well. I want to urge you to continue to give Mr. Speaker and other principal officers of this Assembly the same support that you people gave to us in the 6th and 7th Assemblies. “The House of Assembly is a learning curve. You cannot pass through this place and remain the same. My prayer is that all of us will end well in Jesus’ name. I want to specially appreciate Mr. Speaker and other officers of the House of Assembly for the peaceful synergy with the executive”.
