A Thailand army-appointed legislature has banned former Prime Minister, Yingluck Shinawantra from office and politics for five years over allegations of corruption.

The former Prime Minister whose government was recently ousted in a military coup was accused of corruption involving a scheme she oversaw to subsidise rice to farmers.

Thai authorities have also launched a legal case that could result to a 10-year jail term for the ex-PM.

The military has ruled Thailand since May 2014 when it overthrew Yingluck’s government in a coup.
