Sepp Blatter, FIFA President, on Saturday said the organization would give full support to three West African countries heavily hit by the Ebola Virus Disease outbreak.
Blatter who made the pledge at the FIFA headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland said that the issue would be discussed and agreed upon at the organisation’s next Finance Committee meeting that would hold in France on September 25.
He said that the World Health Organisation, WHO, has identified the stadium as the safest and most effective location for such units in the affected countries.
Blatter said FIFA would cover the costs of any damage to the pitch that might be caused by the treatment units.
“The additional financial support would be spent in solidarity with United Nations initiative on the fight against the epidemic,” FIFA said.
Meanwhile, Wilfried Lemke, Special Adviser to the UN Secretary-General on Sport for Development and Peace, recognizing that the Ebola outbreak has also had tremendous impact on the sport community said, “National authorities, the UN and the world of sport bodies need to work closely together in order to halt the spread of the disease.”
