The Federal Government has directed the immediate closure of forty-seven (47) Federal Unity Colleges across the country following rising security concerns in multiple regions. The directive, issued by the Federal Ministry of Education, is aimed at safeguarding students and staff amid escalating threats.

The closure order was contained in an official circular dated December 21, 2025, from the Office of the Director, Senior Secondary Education Department, Federal Secretariat, Abuja. The letter, addressed to all principals of Federal Unity Colleges, stated that the Honourable Minister of Education approved the shutdown in response to heightened insecurity and the urgent need to prevent potential breaches in affected areas.

According to the circular, the decision became necessary “sequel to the recent security challenges in some parts of the country and the need to prevent any security breaches.”

The move has triggered nationwide concern among parents and stakeholders, many of whom are seeking clarity on evacuation procedures, remote learning arrangements, and timelines for reopening. Education authorities, however, say additional guidelines will be issued in due course.
