In a major political development, the Governor of Enugu State has officially announced his defection from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), marking one of the most high-profile political transitions in the South-East in recent years.

Speaking at a press briefing titled “Charting a New Course: Transition from PDP to APC,” the governor described the move as a “break from the past” and a necessary step to secure the future of Enugu’s transformation agenda.

“Today, I stand before you to announce a decision that will shape the road ahead. This concerns our values, how we organize ourselves politically, and how we secure the future of our projects and our people,” he said.

The governor expressed gratitude to the people of Enugu—whom he referred to as Ndi Enugu—for their trust, faith, and support since his election, crediting them for the state’s rapid transformation.

He highlighted several milestones achieved under his administration, including:

  • Completion of Smart Green Schools and primary healthcare centres across all 260 wards.
  • A recorded 80% drop in crime rates through an AI-powered Command and Control Centre and 150 distress response vehicles.
  • Construction of over 1,000 kilometers of paved roads.
  • A 600% increase in internally generated revenue (IGR).
  • Restoration of water supply and revival of critical assets like Hotel Presidential and Nigergas.
  • Launch of Enugu Air, eco-tourism projects, and the establishment of farm estates across local governments.

He also noted that Enugu recently received the Renewed Hope Initiative’s Model Green State Award as the cleanest state in Nigeria.

“It looks like Enugu on the national – indeed global – map,” he declared to applause from supporters.

Acknowledging his long history with the PDP, the governor thanked the party for providing the platform that brought him to power, but said leadership sometimes required “painful but necessary choices.”

“The PDP supported us through a demanding campaign and joined in celebrating our victory. But leadership sometimes demands difficult—even painful—decisions in service of higher principles,” he said.

“After long reflection, we have made the decision to leave the PDP and join the All-Progressives Congress.”

He described the defection as a realignment with the “Renewed Hope” vision of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, pledging to collaborate closely with the federal government to accelerate Enugu’s development.

Political observers believe this move could reshape the political dynamics of the South-East, as the APC seeks to strengthen its influence in a region historically dominated by the PDP.

The announcement was met with mixed reactions across social media, with some commending the governor’s boldness and others questioning the timing and motivation behind the defection.

As Enugu looks ahead to 2027, the governor emphasized that his priority remains continuity, stability, and inclusive growth.

“Our journey continues—not as a breakaway, but as a bridge to a greater Enugu. Tomorrow is here,” he concluded.
