Thousands of devoted followers gathered in Dharamshala, India, on Sunday to honour the 90th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism. The milestone event was marked by colourful festivities, deep spiritual reflection, and a significant announcement about his reincarnation.

Draped in a traditional robe and golden shawl, the Dalai Lama was escorted into the temple courtyard by senior monks, while Tibetan artists played drums, bagpipes, and cymbals in his honour. “When I look back on my life, I see that I have not wasted it at all,” the Dalai Lama told the crowd. “I live my life in the service of other sentient beings.”

Born Tenzin Gyatso, the Dalai Lama has lived in exile in Dharamshala since 1959, after fleeing Tibet following China’s occupation. Revered by millions as the living incarnation of Chenrezig, the Buddhist deity of compassion, he remains a powerful global symbol of peace, humility, and resistance to oppression.

Celebrations capped a week of tributes across the Tibetan exile community and the broader Buddhist world. During the week, the Dalai Lama made a long-anticipated announcement—he plans to reincarnate after his death, putting to rest fears that he might be the last to hold the position.

Following ancient Buddhist tradition, the Dalai Lama said the next reincarnation would be identified and recognized in accordance with Tibetan spiritual customs. “I will be reborn,” he said, reaffirming past statements that his successor will emerge in the free world, outside of Chinese control.

This move is widely seen as a direct counter to Beijing, which insists it alone has the authority to approve any future Dalai Lama. China considers the current Dalai Lama a separatist and has signaled it will reject any spiritual successor not chosen under its authority—raising fears of a politically imposed replacement to solidify its grip on Tibet.

The birthday event drew a host of dignitaries and international well-wishers. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Dalai Lama as “an enduring symbol of love, compassion, and moral discipline,” while U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called him “a beacon of unity and peace.” Actor Richard Gere, a longtime supporter of the Tibetan cause, attended the ceremony and called the Dalai Lama “the most extraordinary man to ever walk on this planet.”

Celebrations extended beyond India, with Buddhist prayers and dances held in Kathmandu, Nepal, where Tibetan refugees also marked the day in spiritual solidarity.

In a message posted on his website, the Dalai Lama reaffirmed his core mission: “I am just a simple Buddhist monk, and I will continue to focus on promoting human values and religious harmony.”

The Dalai Lama, who hopes to live to the age of 130, remains one of the most influential moral leaders of our time—his life a testament to resilience, peace, and unwavering commitment to compassion, even in exile.
