A devastating fire erupted on Christmas Eve at the iconic Great Nigeria Insurance House, a 25-storey commercial high-rise on Martins Street in the heart of Lagos Island, destroying millions of naira worth of goods and spreading to over 10 nearby buildings.

The blaze, which started around 4:40-5:00 p.m. on December 24, rapidly engulfed multiple floors of the building – a bustling plaza known for housing clothing warehouses, retail shops, and offices near the famous Balogun Market. Thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky as emergency responders battled the inferno late into the night and through Christmas morning.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu visited the scene on December 25 for an on-the-spot assessment, announcing that the severely damaged structure will be demolished in the coming days to ensure public safety. A committee led by the Commissioner for Special Duties will oversee the process.

“No lives were lost, and we thank our brave firefighters and responders for their tireless efforts,” Governor Sanwo-Olu said. “Lagos will rise stronger from this.”

Seven people sustained burn injuries of varying degrees and were promptly hospitalized, according to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).

The fire also impacted adjacent structures, including the seven-storey Radio Nigeria building (now extinguished), Oluwole Plaza, a nearby mosque, and several other properties.

Multi-agency responders – including LASEMA, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Federal Fire Service, Nigeria Police, and paramedics – worked overnight to contain the blaze, which is now under control with dampening operations ongoing.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
This incident underscores persistent fire safety concerns in Lagos’ densely packed commercial districts, coming just months after other high-rise blazes in the city.
