Ghanaian international footballer Thomas Partey has pleaded not guilty to multiple charges of rape and sexual assault at Southwark Crown Court, even as the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) confirmed that it authorised charges after reviewing what it called a “comprehensive file of evidence.”
The 32-year-old midfielder, who joined Spanish side Villarreal this summer after leaving Arsenal, faces five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault involving three women. The alleged incidents are said to have taken place between April 2021 and June 2022.
According to the CPS, the charges were brought following a lengthy Metropolitan Police investigation that included statements from multiple complainants. While the CPS stressed it had reviewed a wide-ranging evidence file, the specifics of the evidence remain confidential, fueling public speculation and scrutiny.
Partey, represented by his legal team, has consistently denied the allegations. His lawyers maintain that he has fully cooperated with investigators and will vigorously contest the charges in court.
Under UK law, the identities of the alleged victims are protected by lifetime anonymity, meaning further details of the cases cannot be disclosed.
The court has set the next hearing for later this year, with the trial expected to attract intense media coverage given Partey’s profile as one of Africa’s most high-profile football stars.
The case underscores growing scrutiny of footballers and accountability in professional sport, even as the lack of clarity on the “comprehensive evidence file” continues to stir debate among fans and the public.
