The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has taken a major step toward shaping Nigeria’s political future by officially zoning its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria for a single four-year term.
The landmark decision was adopted at the party’s maiden National Convention held in Abuja on Saturday, where delegates unanimously endorsed a power-rotation formula aimed at promoting national unity and balancing regional interests.
Under the resolution, the NDC declared that its presidential candidate for the 2027 general election must emerge from the South and, if elected, serve only one term ending in 2031. After that, the party’s presidential ticket will rotate to Northern Nigeria for the next electoral cycle.
The resolution stated: “Be it resolved by this convention mandating southern zoning in 2027 that the Nigerian Democratic Congress hereby zones its presidential ticket for the 2027 presidential elections to Southern Nigeria for a single term of four years ending in 2031.”
The motion was moved by Afam Victor Ogene, who represents Ogbaru Federal Constituency in Anambra State, and was overwhelmingly endorsed by party delegates. The convention also ratified the party’s National Executive Committee.
The decision is widely seen as a major boost for Peter Obi, one of the most prominent opposition figures from Southern Nigeria, whose potential candidacy has generated significant public interest.
The zoning arrangement is also viewed as a strategic compromise designed to accommodate influential northern politicians, including Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who reportedly supported the formula and described it as a fair and unifying approach.
Political analysts say the move could strengthen the NDC’s efforts to consolidate opposition forces and position the party as a formidable challenger to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 presidential election.
The NDC, which was registered earlier in 2026 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has quickly attracted national attention with a growing list of high-profile supporters and defectors.
Party leaders used the convention to call for greater cooperation among opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and other influential politicians, to unite under one platform and mount a strong challenge in 2027.
The announcement has already sparked intense debate across political circles and social media, with many Nigerians describing the zoning formula as one of the most significant developments in the build-up to the next general election.
With the South now formally favored for the NDC ticket, attention is expected to shift to potential aspirants and the political alliances that could define the race for Nigeria’s highest office.
