Professor Attahiru Jega, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has disclosed the Commission would not be able to proceed with the February 14 and 28 Elections as scheduled.
Jega disclosed this on Saturday after a meeting with 25 civil society groups in Abuja. He informed the meeting that the elections have to be shifted because all security agencies in the country have indicated to the Commission, in writing, that they would not be providing INEC with any support for the elections.
Sources at the meeting said Jega told his obviously disappointed audience that the elections would have to be shifted because the security agencies claim that they were going on a six weeks operation against the Boko Haram sect and that the operation is billed to commence on the same February 14 earlier scheduled for the Presidential elections.
Such posturing from the security agencies that are supposed to provide logistical support for the INEC, clearly means that the Commission cannot proceed with the election as planned.
