Rochas Okorocha, governor, Imo State, has said that the current insecurity challenge in Nigeria can be tackled if the government engages community leaders and the people in the affected areas.
He stated this yesterday in Owerri while receiving journalists who had come to Imo State for the annual Nigeria Media Merit Awards, NMMA.
He urged the Federal Government to emulate Imo State in tackling kidnapping and other insecurity challenges in the country.
“I made all community leaders chief security officers and involved the people in the community because they live there and know everyone in the community. Within few weeks, they submitted names of kidnappers and that was the end,” he said.
Governor Okorocha added that a situation where the government spends so much money fighting insecurity, which some Nigerians benefit from, would only add to the problem rather than bringing solutions.
He stated that if right steps were taken, the troubled states can fight the menace and restore peace.
“If the affected states are countries on their own, they will solve the problems without spending fortunes,” he added.
