Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2027 Oyo State governorship election, reigniting political discussions across the southwest with his bold statement: “I contested in 2019 and 2023, so in 2027 — Èmi Lókàn.”
The Yoruba phrase, meaning “It’s my turn,” immediately drew comparisons to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s now-famous slogan used during his 2023 presidential campaign, suggesting Adelabu’s confidence and renewed determination to return to Oyo’s political frontlines.
Adelabu made the declaration during a public engagement in Ibadan, where he emphasized his unwavering commitment to Oyo’s development and his belief that his past experience in both the private and public sectors uniquely positions him to lead the state.
The Minister previously contested the Oyo governorship under the All-Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019 and under the Accord Party (AP) in 2023. Despite both unsuccessful runs, Adelabu maintained strong political visibility and was later appointed Minister of Power by President Tinubu in 2023 — a move many saw as a revival of his national political profile.
Political observers say Adelabu’s early declaration signals the start of intense political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections. His supporters hail him as a “resilient technocrat with the heart of a reformer,” citing his performance as a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and his ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s power sector.
While critics argue that his “Èmi Lókàn” slogan may polarize opinions, others believe it’s a confident expression of readiness after years of political endurance.
As Oyo’s political landscape begins to heat up, all eyes will be on Bayo Adelabu — the banker-turned-politician who believes 2027 will finally be his turn.
