Ghanaian authorities have arrested 50 Nigerian nationals in a nighttime raid on the outskirts of Accra, the capital city, over allegations of involvement in online fraud, the government confirmed on Wednesday.
According to Sam George, Ghana’s Information Minister, the suspects—including two women—were linked to 48 suspected cybercrime operations, allegedly engaging in romance scams, online investment fraud, impersonation schemes, and illicit online gold trading.

The arrests highlight Ghana’s growing struggle with internet fraud, a trend fueled by scarce economic opportunities for youth, who sometimes turn to online scams as a source of income. In response, authorities have introduced stricter regulations on gold trading, including limits on foreign purchases, aiming to curb illicit online gold transactions.

While Nigeria has built a global reputation for its thriving fintech sector, it has also faced challenges with cybercrime. Earlier this year, nearly 800 people were arrested in Lagos for online fraud, including 150 Chinese nationals, reflecting the transnational nature of such crimes.

Ghana’s recent raid underscores the government’s determination to crack down on cybercrime and protect both citizens and foreign nationals from online scams. Authorities have vowed to continue aggressive monitoring and enforcement actions against cybercriminal networks operating in the country.

The Information Minister urged residents to exercise caution online and remain vigilant, reiterating that law enforcement will take decisive action against anyone involved in fraudulent activities, regardless of nationality.

This operation serves as a stark reminder of the increasing cross-border challenge of cybercrime in West Africa and the urgent need for regional cooperation to tackle the issue.
