Felabration 2014 kicked off on Sunday, October 12 to celebrate the life of the legendary Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.
The theme for this year’s debate, which is the amalgamation of the peoples of the Niger area, focuses on the Centennial anniversary of the coming together of Northern and Southern Nigeria.
Speaking at the debate, Sophie Oluwole, professor of philosophy, said the problem facing Nigeria is the inability to manage the resources of the country and corruption.
She emphasized that colonialism brought Nigeria to where it is today and not amalgamation. “It is an understatement to say that Nigeria would never have amalgamated without Lord Luggard because we are humans and we move around, one way or the other we would have amalgamated,” she said.
Emeka Keazor, a lawyer, argued that amalgamation should not be forced, if the nation wants to be divided, those involved should be asked for what they want. “The only solution is fixing the leak that brought us where we are and not amalgamation or breaking up,” Keazor said.
