As there was wide jubilation in the United States Saturday over the victory at the polls by Joseph Biden Jr. former Vice President, so were messages suggesting relief from world leaders about the impending change of government in Washington DC. Biden won the election, believed to have shown the widest division in America in recent times after winning the 20 Electoral College votes from Pennsylvania. In fact, his message has been to call for national healing.

Biden’s triumph makes him the 46th president of the United States, while Kamala Harris, his vice president, broke the jinx by becoming the first woman to be elected as the United States’ vice president.
The President-elect had been leading convincingly in four states like Nevada, Arizona, Georgia and Pennsylvania, in an election that created tension not only in America but in the whole world.

He won by scoring 279 Electoral College votes [nine over the required 270 of such votes to win the poll] against the incumbent President, Trump who garnered 213 Electoral College Votes.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has refused to concede defeat, insisting that illegal votes made up what was declared for Biden. He may approach the court.

The British prime minister , Boris Johnson in his congratulatory message to Biden said, “The US is our important ally and I look forward to working closely together on our shared priorities, from climate change to trade and security.” Emmanuel Macron of France said, “We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together”. Though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is yet to issue a statement, opposition leader Yair Lapid said, “Congratulations to my friend President-elect Joe Biden and Vice president-elect Kamala Harris.” The Indian prime minister, Narenda Modi said, “Congratulations Joe Biden on your spectacular victory!”
For President Muhammadu Buhari Biden’s victory “ is a significant reminder that democracy is the best form of government because it offers the people the opportunity to change their government by peaceful means.” Former president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo described Biden’s election as “Victory of good over evil”, adding that ‘it is not victory for you and the American people alone, but victory for most people of the world”.
