Abiola Awosika, professor of entrepreneurship, Olawoyin Awosika School of Innovative Studies, speaking at the annual Millennium Development Goal, MDG, awards, on Saturday, November 1, emphasised the need for women’s active participation in today’s Nigeria politics.
“We serve men as daughters, as mothers, and as wives, so we also ought to be able to serve them in politics. If a woman is strong and aggressive, they say she is pushy but if a man is aggressive as well they say he is ambitious,” Awosika said.
She also enthused the need for Nigerian men to drop certain stereotypes that restrain women from active political participation.
The annual MDG award, which held at the Sheraton hotel, Ikeja, Lagos saw three individuals and a platform cart away awards.
They areAlice Lawrence, Commissioner for Education, Rivers State, who got an award for her efforts in giving quality education to Rivers State children; Ikechukwu Ameachi who won the MDG media award for his efforts in the media and Bolanle Onabanjo who won the MDG compassionate prize which comes with a N100,000 cash prize. Political Platform, a program on Raypower FM also received an award for what was described as its “fearless and investigative journalism.”
Fred Agbaje, legal practitioner, who was the chairman of the event, complained about the penchant of Nigerians to come late to functions.”If it were to be money that was going to be shared here today, this place would have been full as early as 11:30am. This is the situation we have found ourselves, to come out to celebrate and honour great Nigerians, we relent. And we blame the government for everything, we need to be disciplined as Nigerians.”
Chuks Nwoko, the organizer of the award lauded and encouraged the awardees not to relent in their efforts as they have been awarded and expected to do more.
“The essence of this yearly award is for us to come together as a family to celebrate, also reflecting on issues that affect us as a country,” Nwoko said.
