A 35-year-old widow, Habiba Abdullahi who was arrested for allegedly dumping her four-week-old baby in front of another person’s house in Kaduna
State on Wednesday appeared in Upper Sharia Court, Daura Road in Kaduna.
The Police arraigned the suspect who lived at New Bida Road, Tudun Nupawa in Kaduna on one count of child abandonment.
The Police told the court that the baby was brought to Metro Area Police Command, Kaduna, on Oct. 25, by one Sani Ahmed of Ahmed Abu Street by Poly
Road Kaduna. Ahmed said that at about 8pm, he found the baby in front of his house, wrapped in a black polythene bag.
The accused who admitted giving birth to the child, said she abandoned the child because she already had two other children to cater for; and that
adding another one would be a burden on her.
The prosecutor told the court that the offence contravened the provisions of Section 206 of the Kaduna State Penal Code Laws, 2017. After the charges
were read to her, the accused pleaded not guilty.
While adjourning the case till December 18, 2018 for hearing, Abubakar Jumare, the Judge admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N100, 000 with
two sureties in like sum. Jumare ordered that the sureties must reside within the jurisdiction of the court and one of the sureties must present a
Certificate of Occupancy, C of O to the court
