Two Dead As Another Building Collapses in Lagos

There was tragedy on Sunday when another building under construction collapsed in Lagos State. Two yet unidentified bodies were recovered by a combined team of rescue workers from the Red Cross, Nigeria Emergency Management Agency, NEMA and Lagos State Safety and Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA that have mobilised to site from the wee hours of the day when distress calls went out from the scene of the disaster.

The building, which is on the Oba Idowu Oniru Street, was said to have caved in around midnight on Sunday. It is believed that about six workers were sleeping within the premises when the incident occured. That was the account of residents of the area who heard the noise of the collapse. But Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, permanent secretary of LASEMA said his agency got the distress call around 3:00 am and swiftly mobilised to site. He said someone on the ground gave the information about the number of people believed to have been trapped under the building.

Rescue operation continues as at the time of filing this report. The building involved is a seven-storey structure under construction.

In November last year a 21-storey building collapsed in Ikoyi, also in Lagos recording 44 casualties. In May this year two other incidents occurred in the state, which happened at Ebute-Metta and Ago Palace, Okota.
