TELL Magazine has retained its pre-eminent position as Nigeria’s leading newsmagazine. The magazine won the honour at the Nigerian Media Merit Award, NMMA which held at the Muson Centre, Lagos on Wednesday, December 13. The magazine beat The Source magazine to the prize, further boosting its rich cabinet of trophies. TELL’s chief operating officer, Dejo Oyawale, collected the prize on behalf of the company. The magazine’s reporter, Anthony Akaeze was runners up in the sports reporting category won by Alimi Taiwo Olagbenga of The Nation newspaper. Other winners on the night included Isioma Madike of New Telegraph who undoubtedly was the star of the night with nine nominations. He won in two categories: entertainment and energy. Others are Felix Nwaneri of the New Telegraph who won the political reporter of the year, Godwin Ugwuanyi of The Nation newspaper, power reporter, Yejide Gbenga-Ogundare of Nigeria Tribune, agriculture reporter of the year, Mojeed Alabi of New Telegraph, education reporter of the year, Eric Dumo of Punch, CSR reporter of the year, Ozioma Ubabukoh of Punch, environment reporter of the year. Others include Seun Akioye of The Nation, foreign news reporter of the year, Okorie Uguru of the Nation, tourism reporter of the year, Collins Nweze of The Nation, finance reporter of the year, Wole Shadare of New Telegraph, aviation reporter of the year, Arukaino Umukoro of Punch, defence reporter of the year, Tosin Omoniyi of New Telegraph, female reporter of the year, Betty Abah, print journalist of the year, Punch, newspaper of the year, Channels TV, television station of the year, among others.
Eminent Media Icon awards were also given to Lateef Jakande, former governor of Lagos State, Alexander Ibru, founder of Guardian newspaper, Olubunmi Aboderin, founder of Punch newspaper and Ismail Babatunde Jose, the pioneer chairman, NMMA Board. The last three are late.
The event was witnessed by media managers like Maiden Ibru, wife of Alexander who, along with some family members, collected the prize on her husband, Wale Aboderin, son of Aboderin, who’s currently the chairman of Punch, and also collected his father’s prize, Funke Egbemode, managing director of New Telegraph, Ralph Akinfeleye, a professor of mass communication who is the chairman of NMMA panel of assessors, Lai Mohammed, minister of information who represented President Muhammadu Buhari and Tunji Bello who stood in for Akinwunmi Ambode, governor of Lagos State.
