Synagogue: Death toll Hits 44 As Rescue Operation Continues

The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, has confirmed 44 persons dead in the building that collapsed in the premises of the Synagogue Church of All Nations,SCOAN,Ikotun, Lagos last Friday.

The agency in its latest update on the incident said 130 people were rescued alive.

Ibrahim Farinloye,the Southwest spokesperson of NEMA, said, most of the people rescued were women, accounting for 80 per cent of the total number of victims, including children between the ages of four and eight who had since been reunited with their families.

The agency said excavation is still on at the site to recover more bodies that might be buried under the building.

The incident, which occurred on Friday afternoon at 12.54 pm, saw the five-storey building which was under construction collapse, burying hundreds of people in the rubble.

Governor BabatundeFashola has already ordered security agencies to arrest anyone obstructing rescue work, including church members at the site.
