Supplementary Elections: Violence in Kano, Taraba and Benue

Generally the reports have been that there was peaceful conduct in most polling units where supplementary elections are being held this Saturday. The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC is holding the elections in five states for Governorship and 17 states and FCT for other elections.

But violence has been reported in three states of Kano, Taraba and Benue. In Benue State election materials were hijacked and set ablaze in one of the local government areas. There were however no report of death or assault on voters and  election officials. It is a different story in two other states. Taraba and Kano presented a rather rowdy story. In Taraba one person is said to have lost his life, while hoodlums inflicted injuries on voters after invading polling units in other areas.

Armed hoodlums sacked voters in Dala local government in Kano when they invaded a polling area. A similar report was made of disruption of voting process by hoodlums in another local government. Unconfirmed report say the police may have arrested a member of the cabinet in the state. The security is said to be working on the theory that the commissioner led the hoodlums to disrupt the election in that local government.
