Sierra Leone Confirms Ebola Virus Deaths

EbolaAt least four persons have been reported dead in Sierra Leone due to Ebola Virus. Sierra Leone health ministry officials said this is the first confirmed case in the West African country following a similar outbreak in Guinea.

Amara Jambai, director of disease prevention and control at Sierra Leone’s health ministry, said a health worker was among the four persons who had died of Ebola. The deaths occurred over the last three to four days, Jambai said. The affected people died in the eastern Kailahun district, which borders southern Guinea where the outbreak started in March and has killed more than 145 people.

Health officials said people have a better chance of surviving the virus if it is identified early and they get supportive medical care. Ebola can kill up to 90 per cent of those infected and it is passed on through contact with the fluids of infected people or animals, such as urine, sweat and blood.

Jambai said that people who develop a fever should immediately report to a medical facility and an emergency medical team will be deployed to such an area.
