The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC has warned Public officers who habitually collect double allowances to stop the act or prepare for a five-year jail term.

In a statement signed by Folu Olamiti, ICPC Media Consultant, the anti-graft agency warned public officers to stop the practice of collecting double Duty Tour Allowances from their agencies and also receiving or demanding same in cash or facilities from the agencies being visited when they attend meetings, monitoring or oversight functions involving two government or corporate organisations.

The ICPC gave the advice after the conviction it secured at the High Court of Justice in Gusau, Zamfara State against Bello Shallah Ahmed, acting Provost of the College of Education (Technical) Gusau, Zamfara State. Shallah had collected double Duty Tour Allowance, DTA for the same trip and was sentenced to five years jail term without the option of fine.

The ICPC cited Section 19 of the ICPC Act 2000, which declares such offence punishable.

The section reads: “Any public officer who uses his office or position to gratify or confer any corrupt or unfair advantage upon himself or associate of the public officer or any public officer shall be guilty of an offence and shall, on conviction, be liable to imprisonment for five years without option of fine.”
