Rivers Poly Students Cry Out Over Insecurity

The rising wave of kidnappings, armed robbery and violent crimes in Ogoniland, particularly in Bori and other parts of Khana Local Government Area has begun to take a toll on academic activities at the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic, Bori, Rivers State.

Students of the polytechnic said they have become victims of the onslaught of the criminals, who have continued their attacks on them and the rest of the community unrestrained.

Manson Dulebabari, who is the Chief Judge of the Students Union Government, said students were now attacked on a daily basis in the streets and their off-campus residences.

In an online post he entitled, “Rescue Ken Poly Students,” Dumlelabari said the criminals operated freely at Miami Lodge, MTN Mast area, M-Republic, Macro Street, Agbani Street and Princey-Bara. He said students lost valued property and were injured by the hoodlums each time they raided.

But the police have promised to restore security in the polytechnic town. Nnamdi Omoni, the Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, said police personnel have been put on the alert in the area.

While sympathizing with the students and the polytechnic community, Omoni said, “We are committed to bringing the situation under control. Just bear with us. Soon, there will be calm.”

Ceaseless cult clashes and, kidnappings and armed robbery have sent villagers packing from many communities in Ogoniland.

This has adversely affected economic, educational and social lives of the people who now take refuge in Bori, neighbouring local government areas and Port Harcourt. It is not unusual to find young Ogoni people, who have left their villages roaming the streets of Port Harcourt, Eleme and Bori.

Cult wars and kidnapping for ransom by criminal elements have become a serious social problem in Rivers State generally.
